The most amazing thing about this product is the new backup software. WOW this is so easy. This is by far the best WD passport ever. This is the third WD passport I have had. I never like any of the software at all (I did love the product). And I can not stress the fact on how easy this new backup software is. This software alone is worth a lot. Finely a user friendly WD passport, Very user friendly! I will be recommending this product very highly. Thanks WD for making this super user friendly. My main reason I bought this was to back up my computer. I see some people just want a hard drive, I guess this would not be a good choice if you did not want the backup software.

First and foremost, It says 1TB hard drive. It’s NOT. 930 GB!!!! This is just frustrating. If it is 930; then advertise 930; not 1 GB. Secondly, the software is as bad as everyone says. I was able to quickly remove it, but really. . . what were they thinking.

Having now purchased and started using the 1 TB WD Passport, I can now answer the question I raised in my Amazon “review” of three weeks ago about whether the USB cable now shipping (mid-April 2010) with this product forms a sturdy reliable connection with the device. It does, or at least MINE does.
No muss, no fuss. I just plugged the thing into my iMac Snow Leopard machine and the Apple “Time Machine” backup software offered to reformat the ntfs drive as a Mac drive. Backup then proceeded without a hitch and showed 999. 16 GB of available space. I have used the WD 500 GB drive for more than a year and have had no problems. I will use the two drives in tandem, with one always in the safety deposit box at the bank. And this is about the only 1 TB drive that is small enough to fit in a conventional safety deposit box.

First of all I want to say that I had a terrible time hooking up this drive to my laptop but it worked perfectly when I hooked it up to my daughter-in-law’s computer. She has now had it connected for ten days without any problems.
I love the directions for this. The first picture shows the USB going into the side of the computer, and the second shows the laptop and hard drive connected. I love directions that include two pictures. It should have been much easier than it turned out to be.
My husband, who had been shopping for a(nother) storage drive alerted me to the fact that some people were having trouble with this drive and wow, there are a lot of mad people. But right away, reading the reviews, the common elements that seemed to make people mad have already been addressed by WD. The USB cord was an issue – and I’m certainly glad I didn’t get one of the original ones. And the software was an issue. My abilities range on a scale somewhere from yes, I have seen smoke coming out of one of my computers in the 80s (okay, and 90s), to being generally competent enough to manage most devices from a central media server. (In other words, if I can do it, anyone can. ) It does not take a rocket scientist nor a programmer to go to WD’s site to download the UPDATE FOR THE FIRMWARE.
The directions for the update were straightforward. It asks you to turn off any firewalls, as well as any programs that might need drive access during the update. That was when the trouble started.
This is the message I got when I plugged the hard drive into my computer:
“A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
“BAD_POOL_HEADER”
(Then there was a lot of information I found irrelevant. ) It ended by saying:
“Technical information:
“*** STOP: 0x)0000019 (0×00000020,, 0×89725668, 0×89725680, 0x1A030001)
“Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance. ”
My support group? OHOH! (My support group is no longer taking my calls during business hours. ) This was all on a big blue screen with white lettering. It definitely got my attention. On completion of these steps, I reconnected the drive. What followed was a repeat of the big scary message above. This happened several times while trying to reboot the computer with the device connected or not and with the firmware on or off the computer. I tried all the possible variations. The computer would start but within a few minutes, crash.
Onward and upward!!! I took the drive to my DIL’s computer after having forewarned her. Before we plugged it in, I asked her if she had read the reviews on the product. She WASN’T WORRIED.
She plugged it in and it worked. Perfectly well. She said she might hide the software but she was able to move files from her computer to the drive without any problem. She has now been using it for about ten days without any problem.
She says it’s a great little drive.
